Elysium Trailer

"This ain't gunna kill me." Sony has revealed the second trailer, playing before Man of Steel this weekend, for District 9 director Neill Blomkamp's sci-fi Elysium starring Matt Damon. The first trailer hit back in March and gave us an introduction to the concept and a glimpse at some of the action. This time we get more scenes of incredible full-on action and more of Blomkamp's visually stunning futuristic world. The cast includes Jodie Foster, William Fichtner, Alice Braga and D9's Sharlto Copley as the badass Kruger. This is now my most anticipated movie still left this summer, everything about it looks awesome. Can't wait!

Watch the extended second trailer for Neill Blomkamp's Elysium, originally from Yahoo:

Elysium, directed by South African filmmaker Neill Blomkamp (of District 9), focuses on Secretary Rhodes (Foster), a hardened government official, who will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. However, that doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds. The screenplay was written by Neill Blomkamp. Read more about the film's composer Ryan Amon here. Sony/Columbia has Elysium set to hit theaters on August 9th this summer. You down?

- minus points: trailer is too long, not enough Copley. - plus points: hell - absolutely everything in trailer. Damon looks good, Foster looks good, fx look good, story looks familiar but with some new tweaks, and just like District 9 everything looks tangibly real. so very sold.

You're complaining about the length of a trailer??!

AnotherDan on Jun 13, 2013

only in the sense that a trailer should 'trail' and not reveal too much. a shorter trailer can give an efficient punch without sacrificing impact. trailers have been getting steadily longer and more revealing in recent years. however, i agree with @disqus_pjS5DRYlMe:disqus below, this doesn't look like we get too much of the later acts. having said that, i won't (need to) watch anything else pre-screening!

F'in A, Cotton! Also, first.

I was already in, but that trailer elevated this to an opening night affair. Copley and Damon both look like they will give stellar performances. Understanding Damon's character and intentions made this more interesting, too.

Boom! Very similar feel but looks very epic and gritty. Look forward to it.

Is this a thing now? Trailers just basically being a shorter version of the whole movie?

They seem to release the last trailer that tells you most of the story before it comes out, just in case people don't understand the early ones.

Its actually only the setup of the film, acts 2 + 3 werent really shown, and a lot of cool footage (shown at comic con) was not in the trailer as it was R rated.

Even if this looks fantastic, it shows way too much. So much, that you should have not posted it Alex. Take a stand 😉

Sharlto Copley will be the highlight.

I feel like Blomkamp would have been perfect for the Robocop remake...or for a Gears of War film....or for a Neon Genesis Evangelion film. But please....keep him away from Halo.

Chris Groves on Jun 14, 2013

28

why?? his halo shorts were great!

desispeed on Jun 14, 2013

29

I didn't love them, not compared to a lot of the other live action Halo stuff that's been done. His overly kinetic and gritty style doesn't fit Halo, in my opinion. Halo is much more grand and 'clean' than his general approach. Halo in terms of visual look, color palette, etc...is much more like Star Wars or Starship Troopers. But a game like Gears of Wars IS super gritty and extremely violent and would be a damn near perfect fit for what seem to be Blomkamp's sensibilities and aesthetic.

Chris Groves on Jun 15, 2013

Looks amazing. Elysium is a Halo. Where's Guilty Spark?

David Diaz on Jun 14, 2013

Ok, this is pretty much exactly the same setting in Battle Angel Alita. Not that I'm complaining, the movie still looks great.

Lol, pretty much.

Although it kind of is, it's good that a western director is approaching that type of subject matter. The technology hasn't been available to make a believable version of anime in the scale of the worlds, but hopefully Japanese cinema will step up too. It's not like this will be Dragonball or something, as you said this looks like a great film.

Carpola on Jun 15, 2013

34

OH good, I will watch this in IMAX for sure ! Also looks like they used left over D9 set as well =) Not a fan of Jodie Foster being a villian though.. =\

Could have been worse. Could have been Tilda Swinton.

while this movie was decent and my favorite matt damion movie, i think this movie would have alot better to be japanese cyberpunk themed, with some more fighting abilities/martial arts and techno abilities with the suits than using the D9 sets and mexicans. a better payoff with the romance with damions character and the nurse would have been cooler as well perhaps learning that the girl is his kid. still want a D10 movie badly but this will have to do.

Harry Schmoe on Aug 16, 2013

Nope. This was nowhere near the originality of District 9, and a story like we're had 13 in a dozen. I liked Riddick much more than this, or Oblivion. Both had a better story even though both also not original. They were just more entertaining I guess. 6,5/10 is the maximum I can give this movie. A hero, a whole bunch of shooting, a badass idiot and some cool special effects don't do it any more for me.
