The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Trailer

"I will not risk this quest for the life of one burglar." Warner Bros has debuted the second epic full-length trailer for Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, the second movie in the trilogy based on J.R.R. Tolkien's beloved novel. Martin Freeman returns as Bilbo Baggins, along with Ian McKellan as Gandalf, Richard Armitage as Thorin Oakenshield and the rest of the dwarves. We finally get a glimpse at Luke Evans as Bard the Bowman in the footage, Evangeline Lilly and Orlando Bloom as elves, and an appearance by Smaug the Dragon of course, plus the Mirkwood spiders (ahh!). I'm still in love with this world and can't wait to see the story continue on and expand. This looks as exciting as I was hoping. Enjoy!

In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit… J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit, being directed by Peter Jackson as three separate movies, is set in Middle-Earth 60 years before Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, which Jackson and his filmmaking team brought to the big screen in a trilogy ten years ago. The films, with screenplays by Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Guillermo del Toro and Peter Jackson, were shot consecutively in digital 3D using the latest cameras. The Hobbit follows the journey of Bilbo Baggins, played by Martin Freeman, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor, which was long ago conquered by the dragon Smaug. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug lands in theaters in 3D & 48FPS on December 13th.

The battle of the 5 armies and I'm assuming a showdown with the Necromancer will highlight the 3rd film.

One thing I hope is that The Battle of Five Armies doesn't out-do Pelennor Fields...but it probably will...I dislike the 'prequel that is more epic in scale than the story that takes place after it' notion. But of course, the stakes and tension won't compare at all to anything going on in Return of the King, so there is that.

This in my eyes has none of the intensity the first trilogy had, its tone is completely disney/family oriented, there are just no drama/intense scenes like in the first 3 movies. Say what you want to say but characters like aragorn and sean bean and other fine actors made those movies, and in this, i just cant related to one dwarf that isnt even as charismatic has the first one, and the rest is gandalf just rehashing with bilbo, and imo it doesnt work as great as the first time around. I constantly see these cgi backgrounds popping up as opposed to the beatiful cinematography of live locations the other films had, it felt more real, more pratical and more visceral, it had brutal fight scenes, wich the hobbit didnt have, and i understand the books were more kid oriented, but these director spoiled us with 3 competent mature oriented movies and now comes up with this.. I dont know, maybe im exagerating but this is not what i loved about the first movies..it just looks way toned down for my taste, but heres hoping it will be better as a film than The hobbit was,. It wasnt a terrible movie, it was entertaining, i just felt it was weak compared to the old ones, cause when it comes to the visuals, im pretty sure those wont chance at all, this looks even more cgi'ed when it comes to backgrounds, although i did saw some orcs possibly in makeup/suits , so theres hope.

Stop comparing The Hobbit to The Lord of the Rings. You might as well bring up Jackson's King Kong.

To be fair, The Hobbit *is* a children's tale, and The Lord of the Rings is high romantic fantasy. That you noticed a tonal difference is no mistake -- or accident.

Yeah, and the original animated film was the one that got it right. This film doesn't. It's too long to be considered a good children's tale, and more importantly, has too much going on (subplots) for a children's film. In the original film, they kept it simple, easy to follow, and didn't overdo the action scenes, mainly because of budget/artistic constraints, but that should say something about a film that has constraints vs. a film that doesn't. They're trying to make a more mature complex adult film out of what was a simple but effective children's tale. I won't go so far as to call this a failure, but it is a dissappointment (speaking from viewing of the first film, and trailer impressions of the 2nd film). And I'm only talking from a book adaptation standpoint, not a comparison to Lord of the Rings (though I will say it does suffer similar pacing issues that the original Lord of the Rings animated movie had).

I loved the Rankin Bass Hobbit. It was perfect!

And I was simply replying to the gent who'd complained that the movie seemed tonally different than LOTR's films.

It was a children's book.

I actually like that these films are more light-hearted and 'child-friendly' if you will. Think about it this way, as you progress chronologically, the films will get darker and mature. Just like with the chronological order of Star Wars, you begin with Jar Jar Binks, but end with redemption and the death of the franchise 'hero'

I didn't particularly like the first Hobbit movie, but this one looks a good bit better.

Looks the same as the first hobbit, Thorin annoying as ever, Jackson should have never touch the Hobbit book....

This looks like it has the same problems as the previous movie. A lot of stuff added that wasn't in the book. There's too much use of cgi which could've easily been replaced with practical effects in some cases if they had scaled the movie down, you know, to the level the book was actually at; this is one of the few cases I've seen where the movie goes for bigger scale than the book, to it's disadvantage. And I fear the movie's pacing will suffer in the same way the first film did because of this and because of overdone/overlong/over-the-top action scenes. That said, Smaug is sounding awesome.

Looking forward to it, but from the looks of it, it will continue the 'very good, but nowhere near the perfection of The Lord of the Rings' trend. Which is actually perfect, because then the films will get better when you watch them in chronological order. Also...CGI...CGI everywhere. Obviously CGI is required for a film like this. But in LOTR it seemed like there was more of a mix. It doesn't look like they did any miniatures for this one, or things like that, it's all CGI backgrounds...and I remember when orcs were done with practical prosthetic effects, and not CGI faces. Minor quips, but still. ALSO, I truly hope that once the Hobbit trilogy is done, that they re-release The Lord of the Rings trilogy in theaters, perhaps in 3D. It would be truly amazing to see them on the big-screen again. Also, maybe Jackson can do some sort of 'final cut' for each film?

Chris Groves on Oct 1, 2013

I dunno....comparing this trilogy is not a good thing....They were over 10 years ago...thats more than a decade and cinema styles and visuals change. Look at the 80's fantasy flicks compared to 90's...I think the use of CGI is something we have to get used to as younger generations grow up in a more competent technological world....
