Divergent

The future belongs to those who know where they belong. Following yesterday's new poster for the adaptation of Veronica Roth's best-selling young adult novel of the same name, a new full theatrical trailer for Divergent has arrived. Shailene Woodley takes her first step into sci-fi action (since we're not sure she'll turn up in The Amazing Spider-Man sequels anymore), and it definitely has The Hunger Games vibe to it, but there's something that still feels cheap. There doesn't seem to be any real action in the trailer, and we don't know what's happening in that last shot to make it exciting. Hopefully the film has more to deliver.

Here's the second trailer for Neil Burger's Divergent, from Summit Entertainment:

Divergent is a thrilling adventure set in a dystopian future Chicago where people are divided into distinct factions based on their personalities. Tris Prior (Shailene Woodley) is warned she is Divergent and will never fit into any one group, and when she discovers a conspiracy to destroy all Divergents, she must find out what makes being Divergent so dangerous before it’s too late. Kate Winslet, Ray Stevenson, Mekhi Phifer, Maggie Q, Jai Courtney, Miles Teller, Zoë Kravitz and more star in the film from director Neil Burger (Limitless), written by Evan Daugherty (Snow White and the Huntsman) and Vanessa Taylor ("Game of Thrones"), based on Veronica Roth's book of the same name. Divergent hits theaters on March 21st, 2014.

I am a fan of the books, I just finished the last one. I do have some feelings of trepidation though for this film. It would seem they are going more Twilight then Hunger Games. The last scene is not some much as exciting as it is something they touch on a few times in the book - The Dauntless for fun zip-line from the top of the Sears tower (now the Willis Tower) down to the streets below. I think it will be OK but not the best.

Between all of these weak YA films and the onslaught of comic book garbage, I'm just about ready to give up on movies all together...........

That's a very silly and childish thing to say.

The question is how comes these books get to be published when they are rip-offs of other bad rip-offs and so on and so on. Not one single original idea (including Hunger Games) especially if one has read science fiction from the 50s to the 70s. (K Dick, Brunner, Sheckley, Matheson, Vance...) Ah well, I guess it's like movies, young readers need new covers and young adult heroes instead of adult heroes, just like they need current actors and style to remake older films and many of the classic novels are not properly reprinted. As for the films based on this trash, everything is now "adapted from", so it's natural these lame but apparently popular novels would be adapted into films. I'm not interested in either, and, when I look at the result (like Hunger Games) I don't like it. But it doesn't matter, I'm not the target audience so, good for them that they work. Good also if they still bring kids to read books. Still, it would be nice to see a little bit of originality and depth in the treatment of these stories in the novels, and it might even convey into the movies later. Writing is a process that doesn't involve huge budgets and crews and so many compromises as a movie, so it's terrible to read stuff that looks like it has already been made bland by movies executives. (Yes, I know, publishing executives for such a big market as YA novels are just as stupid, consensual and commercially minded as film execs.) But I do believe it's possible to write well and appeal to large young audiences, even nowadays. People might also like the taste of a free range chicken instead of chicken nuggets... But not everyone is JK Rowlings unfortunately.
