Under the Skin

"When was the last time you touched someone?" Following the most recent teaser and official poster for the erotic sci-fi drama Under the Skin, the full theatrical trailer for the festival circuit film starring Scarlett Johansson has arrived. The visuals look gorgeous and there's some pretty bold praise comparing director Jonathan Glazer (Birth, Sexy Beast) to Stanley Kubrick. This easily seems like the oddest film Johansson has done before, but it looks like a mesmerizing, sexy ride. Thankfully, the trailer doesn't give much away, leaving plenty of mystery for anyone curious enough to see this film when it arrives in the spring. Watch it!

Here's the new official trailer for Jonathan Glazer's Under the Skin, direct form A24:

And here's a slightly different UK version of the Under the Skin trailer from Studio Canal UK:

In search of loners, Laura (Scarlett Johansson) drives around the exquisitely moody landscapes of the Scottish highlands. She’s an alien, sent from afar and equipped with enough human language and awesome seductive power to capture, destroy and presumably send home human males. And then, her curiosity about her human body and an accidental act of pity disrupt her mission. Jonathan Glazer (Sexy Beast, Birth) directs the film and co-wrote the script with Walter Campbell, based on Michael Faber’s novelUnder the Skin was acquired by A24 Films from TIFF 2013, and will begin playing with a limited release April 4th.

So, you would rather have 2 minute 30 second to 3 minute trailer that shows far too much of the plot? Those are the kind of trailers I hate. I love trailers that show you little to nothing. Ex: Every trailer thus far for The Double.

It helps if you actually read the description above: "In search of loners, Laura (Scarlett Johansson) drives around the exquisitely moody landscapes of the Scottish highlands. She’s an alien, sent from afar and equipped with enough human language and awesome seductive power to capture, destroy and presumably send home human males. And then, her curiosity about her human body and an accidental act of pity disrupt her mission."

No, the job of a trailer is to advertise a movie in hopes of enticing people. To find out the story, that's all done through the films complete runtime. Obviously, Under the Skin, looks to be a surreal film and not even a trailer can help you understand what a surreal film is about.

There are so many filmmaker's films that couldn't be justified by a trailer. Ex: Terrence Malick, Ingmar Bergman, Andrei Tarkovsky, and Harmony Korine. All those filmmakers make existential, surreal, metaphysical films that just by watching a trailer won't help you figure out what the film is actually about. Some films just need to be watched in full and not judged by a trailer.

It's about it being the first movie ever where Scarlett gets fully, legitimately naked, and that's why most guys are going to see it. I'm serious, Google it, she's actually naked in it.

I love a trailer that doesn't tell you anything about the story. It gives you an idea for the aesthetic, the mood, the tone, and that's it. You know right off the bat whether you wanna see it or not without knowing a thing about the plot.

I've already loved what I've seen until now. And still this trailer managed to exceed all of my expectations. Wow. This is definitely a must-watch for me now.
