Joaquin Phoenix Falls for His Computer in Spike Jonze's 'Her' Trailer

"I wish I could touch you…" Warner Bros has debuted the trailer for Spike Jonze's Her, starring Joaquin Phoenix as a man in the near future who falls in love with his computer, Samantha, voiced by Scarlett Johansson. This is one of the first of many movies exploring the idea of love or a relationship with a digital entity (there's also Transcendence, The Zero Theorem, Ex Machina coming up) and it has a much lighter, much sweeter touch, without wacky comedy. This looks way better than I was expecting. I love Spike and his films but this seems to be a change of pace and I'm totally into it. Rooney Mara & Amy Adams also star.
Watch the first official trailer for Spike Jonze's Her, in high def from Apple:
Set in LA, slightly in the future, "her" follows Theodore Twombly, a complex, soulful man who makes his living writing touching, personal letters for other people. Heartbroken after the end of a long relationship, he becomes intrigued with a new, advanced operating system, which promises to be an intuitive entity in its own right, individual to each user. Upon initiating it, he is delighted to meet "Samantha," a bright, female voice, who is insightful, sensitive and surprisingly funny. As her needs and desires grow, in tandem with his own, their friendship deepens into an eventual love for each other. Written & directed by Spike Jonze (Being John Malkovich, Adaptation, Where the Wild Things Are). WB will release Her starting December 18th.

Neat. Though, I think it will be quite a while before an AI can understand a "data/da-da" joke. Hell... took me a second.

I am an old person (41) and directors now make me excited more than concepts or stars. An OK trailer but the name Spike Jones....count me in!

Amazing concept and even better visuals. Joaquin Phoenix looks great in this and Scarlett Johansson seems like an even better fit for the voice.

That looks beautiful and terrible (meaning, emotionally) all at once. I must see this.

The films looks depressingly real and possible i.e. falling for a voice and a vision of someone/something rather than someone actual. I think it will ask some interesting questions.
