New York City: We're Hosting a Free 'I Origins' Screening with Disqus

"Maybe the eye really is some kind of window to the soul." We're excited to announce that FirstShowing is partnering with Disqus to host a special screening this week of Mike Cahill's new sci-fi, I Origins, on Thursday, June 26th, in New York City. The film first premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival (read my review) and will arrive in theaters starting this July, but we're happy to offer the opportunity to come check out this film a bit early. This thought-provoking, riveting thriller is best experienced without knowing anything about it. "What if I bring you something that will take your breath away?" It's free, you'll get free popcorn, and you can be a part of an engaging and exciting movie night highlighting a fantastic new indie.
When? Thursday, June 26, 2014 starting at 7:30 PM. Yes, we know there is the World Cup, but it should be finished by the time the screening starts. Where? At the Crosby Street Hotel theater in Manhattan - you must register. What? A screening of I Origins, possibly featuring a Q&A, definitely featuring a discussion and drinks afterward. Disqus is hosting a mixer nearby after the movie to delve into even further discussion on movies. Why? Come see what SlashFilm called says is "the kind of movie that will leave you in profound conversation well after leaving the theater. It is brilliant beyond your expectations." If you're interested in attending the screening of I Origins, you must register via the form below. Please tell us your full name and any guests names so we can check everyone in quickly at the event before it starts.

The second film from writer/director Mike Cahill after Another Earth, I Origins is another original cinematic creation conceived to make you think intensely about your own beliefs. This screening, presented by FirstShowing and Disqus, is being offered for everyone to participate and join in a local community event in person. We want to see you there, we want to show you a great indie film, and we want to talk about what makes movies so amazing. Let's have a fun time.
Please arrive by 7:15PM to guarantee a seat. The cinema is located in the lower level, beneath the lobby. This is a small theater (99 seats) and we expect to fill to capacity, especially with free popcorn plus drinks at the mixer after. I Origins is written and directed by Mike Cahill (Another Earth). Ian Gray (Michael Pitt), a PhD student studying molecular biology with a specialty in eye evolution has an intense, but fleeting, encounter with a mysterious, masked model (Astrid Bergès-Frisbey) who escapes into the night. With only a picture of her stunning and iconic eyes, he tracks her down, and they fall in love. Their fundamentally different beliefs about life only serve to intensify their connection, and they vow to spend forever together. Years later, Ian and his lab partner, Karen (Brit Marling), make a stunning discovery with profound existential implications. The film premiered at Sundance 2014 and Fox Searchlight Pictures releases it in limited theaters July 18th.

I can't wait for this to come out so I can stop seeing the trailer before movies. If the movie turns out to be better than the trailer I'll probably never know.

So, maybe I am crazy. That said. Last year my neighbor was digging up her lawn for a garden and unearthed several box turtle babies which she offered to me and I took. I bought aquariums and stocked it with everything typical including food. They would not eat. So, after a hard rain I went out and collected earthworms and put them in the cage. Concerned that my turtles would die from malnutrition/starvation I went up, the first night, every hour to check on them. My turtle babies did not move BUT the worms did, every single time I turned on the lights I caught those worms at the top of the aquarium trying to move between the lid and the plastic top above the glass, every time, and every time I walked over to the aquarium their, "head," looked my direction and they dropped into the water and disappeared. After four hours of this same thing happening I opened the lid and let them go and never saw those worms again. One of my turtles lived, they other died but that one worm taught all the others how to climb and escape and won; they beat me. They earned it.
