Jupiter Ascending Trailer

"Your Earth is a very small part of a very large industry." Holy shit. Drop everything now and watch this. The next movie from the Wachowskis is an epic sci-fi space opera called Jupiter Ascending, starring Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis, plus Sean Bean being badass as always. The first trailer has arrived, as the film was shot this year and will be released in the thick of next summer. It looks big, bold, epic and potentially like a mess, but I am a huge Wachowskis fan and apologist, and this plays right to me. I believe we're in for something very special and those of us who can see it should pick up on it in the trailer. Enjoy!

Here's the first trailer for the Wachowskis' Jupiter Ascending, direct from WB's YouTube + Apple:

Jupiter Ascending is written and directed by filmmaker siblings Andy Wachowski & Lana Wachowski, the duo behind Bound, the Matrix trilogy, Speed Racer and Cloud Atlas just last year. Official synopsis: In a universe where humans are near the bottom of the evolutionary ladder, a young destitute human woman is targeted for assassination by the Queen of the Universe because her very existence threatens to end the Queen's reign. The cast includes Sean Bean, Eddie Redmayne, Douglas Booth, James D'Arcy and Doona Bae. Warner Bros will open Jupiter Ascending in theaters starting July 18th, 2014 next summer. Excited now?

Had to laugh at your summary.... since it's fairly accurate. Least it won't be too hard on the eyes to watch...

Awesomeness, that's what!

Chris Hunter on Dec 9, 2013

That remains to be seen. I just know that without a synopsis I wouldn't know what the heck this movie is about, just that it's flashy.

Here's the synopsis: "Jupiter Jones (Kunis) was born under a night sky, with signs predicting that she was destined for great things. Now grown, Jupiter dreams of the stars but wakes up to the cold reality of a job cleaning other people's houses and an endless run of bad breaks. Only when Caine (Tatum), a genetically engineered ex-military hunter, arrives on Earth to track her down does Jupiter begin to glimpse the fate that has been waiting for her all along—her genetic signature marks her as next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos."

I know what it was about, what I'm saying is that the preview doesn't clearly communicate what it's about. I just remembered how much I hate the name Caine though.

I was frowning after watching this. I like the Wachowski's a lot as well. This left me somewhat disinterested. I'll keep my hopes up, maybe another trailer will get me excited for it.

Nathan D on Dec 9, 2013

17

I'm willing to give the Wachowskis as many chances as they're willing to take to blow me away like they did with The Matrix. Perhaps it's with this or perhaps it's not, but I'm here for the long haul.

Neuromancer on Dec 9, 2013

18

I was hoping the trailer would state "From the creators of 'The Matrix,'" not 'The Maxtrix Trilogy.'

19

I almost didn't recognized Channing, and I have to say that I think I underestimated his acting.

Franklin Carpio on Dec 9, 2013

20

Everyone did, including me. We all saw him years ago and thought 'stupid meathead' but nope, he's turned out to be downright great.

OfficialJab on Dec 9, 2013

21

He really does seem good. I think lots of folks confuse his typecasting & a lot of the direction with his acting. I imagine his ravenous female following also spurns some negative opinions among the jealous types.

25

I'm wondering if Geof Darrow and/or Steve Skroce helped with story boards for this new movie. Love to see those story boards!

Chris Hunter on Dec 9, 2013

26

That'd be great, Geof Darrow's Matrix drawings are crazy. They seemed to shape the film and actually made it a lot more interesting.

Carpola on Dec 9, 2013

27

I remember loving to see those concepts and drawings! It'll be interesting to me to see.

Chris Hunter on Dec 9, 2013

28

So Tatum is the Morpheus in this story. Kunis is the neo NEO and Bean is Agent Smith. The Matix all over again. There no more stories to tell, othet than rehashes.

PARANAM on Dec 9, 2013

29

Uh, no. But this is the Internet, so everyone knows everything already before even seeing it...

Chris Hunter on Dec 9, 2013

30

Well, i can pretty much predict the story beats and the outcome.

PARANAM on Dec 9, 2013

31

You can assume them. Give it a chance, bro.

Chris Hunter on Dec 9, 2013

32

Every time i get over myself and go to the theatre against better judgement.

PARANAM on Dec 9, 2013

33

Except Bean seemed like he was an ally with Tatum, unlike Agent Smith. Tatum and Kunis seem like they'll fall in love, and that it isn't a 'mentor and apprentice' scenario like Morpheus and Neo. If anything, you could say that the Tatum-Kunis dynamic is more of a reversal of the Trinity-Neo dynamic in the first film, but still clearly not the same thing. Move along, sir.

Chris Groves on Dec 10, 2013

34

interesting, it seems like the plot of an iain m. banks culture novel.

jin choung on Dec 9, 2013

35

anyone knows if this was shot in 3d, or if it was post converted

me on Dec 9, 2013

36

No idea, but given their love of visuals, I'd hope it was natively filmed in 3D, or known up-front it was gonna be converted to allow for proper lighting & depth-placement.

VAharleywitch on Dec 11, 2013

I may be one of the few fans of the Matrix Trilogy...this project looks to be pretty decent.

DAVIDPD on Dec 9, 2013

43

Kunis only has one line in the trailer, and she seems to be the film's protagonist. Weird.

Nielsen700 on Dec 9, 2013

44

Seemed pretty clear to me that it will be a 50/50 kind of scenario. I don't really see Sarah Connor as the protagonist of the first Terminator film. Kyle Reese is the one protecting her, who handles the vast majority of the decisions and actions, and it is through him that she sort of develops into a stronger character. Could be something similar going on here.

Chris Groves on Dec 10, 2013

45

I'm interested. Just a shame though, Sean Bean will probably die.

grimjob on Dec 9, 2013

46

That's a given. I'm pretty sure that when Sean Bean gets a script, he just skips to the end to see what his death scene is gonna be.

James Alexander Peters on Dec 10, 2013

Haha! Nice. I hope that's true.

Trey Wilson on Dec 9, 2013

Just the premise sounds like a cliche, not to mention the trailer, which looks good, but the moment he said your majesty I was out. Hospital scene when he conveniently saves her, was supposed to show the chemistry between the two, but it just wasn't there. I don't know. Hope I am wrong.

55

Even Speed Racer?

TheOct8pus on Dec 10, 2013

56

It was goofy...but it was filmed pretty well, which was no surprise. You can't question directing skills of Wachowski's after watching The Matrix trilogy.

dawko on Dec 10, 2013

57

Speed Racer requires you to accept their adaptation of a goofy cartoon. Once you do that, you get awesome performances and dialogue such as John Goodmans great delivery, and ridiculously cool stylized racing. Its extremely unique, and if you can accept the style, its fantastic.

James Alexander Peters on Dec 10, 2013

58

I don't get why this is a "holy shit" must watch. And anytime I see Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis in the cast it automatically puts a bad taste in my mouth. I wish they would stop casting these talentless high school popularity contest winners when there are incredible actors out there that could do a far better job. They really think people are going to run to the theatre just because those two hacks are in the movie? I'll treat this one like After Earth, just keep walking.

Nobody likes The Truth on Dec 10, 2013

59

I agree about the casting....so sick of "90210" type actors...

TheOct8pus on Dec 10, 2013

60

This hits all the right buttons for me, but I'm hesitant. The Matrix is my all-time favorite movie, and I even liked Reloaded and Revolutions. Unfortunately, the Wachowskis haven't made a film I've enjoyed since. So I have my doubts. BTW, ........" those of us who can see it should pick up on it in the trailer" is a bit pretentious. Just because someone may not like a Wachowski film doesn't make us blind to a good movie. Maybe we just have different tastes.

EmagSamurai on Dec 10, 2013

61

Nice! Skeptically optimistic.

avconsumer2 on Dec 10, 2013

Looks awesome! The cast is not full of favorites, but the Wachowskis' are magicians and I have faith they will pull the best out of Kunis and Tatum. I love to be surprised.

This looks like a futuristic "Snow White"

greengrass on Dec 10, 2013

64

I felt that Cloud Atlas was really an under-appreciated, unique film, very much like The Fountain. This looks like a pretty awesome time at the movies, sort of 'big action sci-fi' and borderline sci-fi/fantasy as opposed to something extremely grounded in realism.

Chris Groves on Dec 10, 2013

65

It "looks" very impressive but as we've seen in many movies before, looks aren't everything. You need a great script and some decent acting if you're going to go for more than just eye candy. I'm doubtful about this one.

Michael Erdman on Dec 10, 2013

66

Scope looks incredible.

Peter Grey on Dec 10, 2013

67

Ever start watching a trailer and get really excited... and then see Channing Tatum is starring in it and have your excitement replaced with repulsion? I loved Cloud Atlas, but Tatum is the male counterpart to Kirsten Stewart.

James Alexander Peters on Dec 10, 2013

68

Although I've yet to see him with perpetual (male equivalent of) "bitch-face" like Stewart has.

VAharleywitch on Dec 11, 2013

69

Channing Tatum has shown promise in what role? Everything I've seen him in has hosted the same vacant expression and wooden recitation of dialogue. Even in The Eagle, playing a Roman, he doesn't vary in expression or delivery. Watch the trailer and I'll give you a dollar if you can spot some acting. He is just as boring to watch as Kirsten Stewart except for his looks. If he was of average attractiveness, he wouldn't get a single role the rest of his life. Keep in mind also that if an actor is funny in a comedy, such as 21 Jump Street, its because of the writers, not the actors. Unless someone is specifically a comedian, they probably don't add more than 5% of their own flare to a comedic role. Anyway, after this is out, it'll be immediately forgotten unless his horribleness is much less central to the plot than the trailer suggests. Which sucks, because the Wachowskis could have really done some cool refreshing stuff with SciFi.

James Alexander Peters on Dec 10, 2013

70

And Keanu in "Matrix" is that much more effective? Not sayin' Tatum is a great actor, but he's solid in what he's asked to do. And the more physical the role, the better. As for Mila... I find her to be rather "blah", possibly more so than CT.

VAharleywitch on Dec 11, 2013

71

This has the wright amount of what-the-fuck-ness to get my attention.

Nash on Dec 10, 2013

72

I can't quite my finger on what's missing in this trailer. Feels like a lot is crammed into a short time frame, but more importantly, I really don't feel grabbed yet. I'm hoping for another trailer soon mixed up a little different, but in the end it's the complete finished project that counts. We'll see. Doesn't look terrible, just a bit uninspired. I'm hoping for the best.
