The Giver What If Featurette

"Where to begin?" TWC has debuted a new featurette for the upcoming adaptation of Lois Lowry's The Giver, being directed by Phillip Noyce. This beloved, Newbery Medal-winning novel is finally being adapted into a movie this year, with Jeff Bridges producing and playing The Giver, and up-and-comer Brenton Thwaites as Jonas. We already seen the first trailer, but one of the complaints was that it was all footage in color. In this featurette, the author herself, Lois Lowry, and the filmmakers address the issue head on by asking "what if?" in a cinematic context and answering: yes, there will be a few scenes in black & white. Including one shown in this featurette - which is a very key scene from the story that fans should recognize.

"I began to think about how important memory is," author Lois Lowry explains in the featurette. See more footage from the movie in the first teaser. "What would happen if we could manipulate human memory?"

The Giver is directed by Phillip Noyce (Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger, The Saint, Catch a Fire, Salt) and adapted by newcomer Michael Mitnick. The haunting story, adapted from Lois Lowry's young adult book of the same name, centers on Jonas (Brenton Thwaites), who lives in a seemingly ideal, if colorless, world of conformity and contentment. Not until he is given his life assignment as the Receiver of Memory does he begin to understand the dark, complex secrets behind his fragile community. Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep also star in the film. The Weinstein Company will release The Giver starting August 15th.
