Self/less Trailer

Would you take a life to live forever? After sending out phones to movie bloggers yesterday, today Focus Features has sent out a link that goes straight to the trailer for Self/less. Indeed, this was what it was all for - a promotion for the upcoming Tarsem sci-fi movie Self/less, starring Ryan Reynolds and Ben Kingsley. Kingsley is an old man who wants his consciousness transferred into Ryan Reynolds. So he goes to Phoenix Biogenic and begins the process. All seems to go well, except things get a little hazy part of the way through. Matthew Goode, Michelle Dockery, Natalie Martinez, Victor Garber and Derek Luke also star. This looks pretty good, though the visual look of the dual minds isn't as trippy as I was expecting. Fire it up.

Here's the first official trailer for Tarsem Singh's new sci-fi Self/less, direct from Focus Features:

Self/less Website

An extremely wealthy man (Ben Kingsley), dying from cancer, undergoes a radical medical procedure that transfers his consciousness into the body of a healthy young man (Ryan Reynolds). But all is not as it seems when he starts to uncover the mystery of the body's origin and the organization that will kill to protect its cause. Self/less is directed by Indian filmmaker Tarsem Singh, of the films The Cell, The Fall, Immortals and Mirror Mirror previously. He's directing from a screenplay by David Pastor & Àlex Pastor (of Carriers, The Last Days, Out of the Dark previously). Focus Features will release Tarsem's Self/less in US theaters starting July 31st later this summer. Visit phoenixbiogenic.com. Do you want to know more?

This looks like it could be good. Ryan Reynolds seems to be making a big push back to interesting roles & projects. If you haven't seen his really great performance in THE VOICES (now on VOD), you should check that one out.

Almost skipped this one because I thought that this must suck, because hi's in this. But that seemed like it may be really good, at least hi didn't suck. Good trailer at least

Reynolds must like playing guys who get their bodies taken over by someone else. This looks cool.

That did NOT look like a Tarsem film (good or bad depending on how you feel about him). The premise is very interesting however.

Anybody remember Nolan's Prestige? And one of the last line in the movie: 'just don't pretend you didn't know'? Or close to it. It's very applicable to this. So, this is already seen. I doubt this is gonna be better executed. But, who knows...

Wait...you think you've seen this movie already because of The Prestige? The bar for stupidity has no bounds. hahahahh

you are the case in point. But, of course, it will be total surprise for me after Cinderella comes at the end and saves the day...

I really like Tarsem as a director. The Cell and The Fall are stunning. I love his visual style but this trailer doesn't seem to showcase it. I'll likely check it out, although I'm a bit hesitant because of Ryan Reynolds. I don't find him very convincing most of the time. Aside from Safe House, I've never really cared for his performances. The life extension premise is cool and it looks like Ben Kingsley will have some quality screen time at the beginning which is good. There's a lot of potential here.

Sucks how they did ruin the twist. Though without it I thought it was just a "remake" of Freejack. And what's with all the Ry Ry hate? Not his fault they made Deadpool & Green Latern pg-freindly manchilds. If he was cast as Captain America, with the same producers/directors/writers as Evans got you'd all be apologizing to him as you would Evans. (i.e. they are both Good Actors)

That's Matthew Goode not Noah Taylor.

Looks okay...I miss the old Tarsem, though. Both The Cell and The Fall are very good movies.

A Tarsem's movie will never be the same without Eiko Ishioka.

I've seen a couple of films with similar story or at least with similar topics- Limitless, Seconds (1966), Lucy, Face/Off and even Nutty Professor (yes it's about "new life, new possibilities and/or more power in one's life"). But to be honest none of them were any good at addressing the topics i mentioned above and odds are Tarsem's new movie wont be an good either. Why is that? To many action not so many brains and courage in my opinion. Most movies didn't dealt with characters in more down to the earth way or didn't had the time to do it right. My bet is Tarsem will do the same because he is more visual then character driven director. And i think it's a great topic that deserves to be done in more serious way and it would be cool to see it in a form of short series (10-12 episodes). The reason for my post here is to bring to people's attention a great novel that deals with topics of new beginning/life/possibilities in a good way. The name of the novel is THE BODY by Hanif Kureishi. Look it out, you might enjoy it.
