Maleficent

Last week, a new trailer for Disney's live-action villain tale Maleficent popped up, and it wasn't all that impressive. The compare and contrast of the animated classic Sleeping Beauty with this new dark vision focusing on Angelina Jolie as the iconic villain just didn't work, and the tone felt misguided. Well, last night during the 56th Annual Grammy Awards, a new spot gives us a much better idea of what to expect from the film. Jolie's voice is haunting, but not nearly as much as the track Lana Del Rey recorded for the film which plays in this vastly superior spot for the summer release. Maybe this'll be good after all? Watch!

Here's the new spot for Robert Stromberg's Maleficent, featuring Lana Del Rey, from Disney:

*Note: The song is Lana Del Rey's rendition of the tune "Once Upon a Dream" from Sleeping Beauty*

Robert Stromberg (a production designer on Alice in Wonderland and Avatar) is making his directorial debut with Maleficent from a script written by Linda Woolverton (The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast). Angelina Jolie plays the title villain from the classic Disney film Sleeping Beauty in this live-action spin that also stars Sharlto Copley (District 9), Elle Fanning (Super 8), Sam Riley (On the Road), Imelda Staunton (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix), Juno Temple (Atonement) and more. Disney sends Maleficent to theaters everywhere in 3D on May 30th, 2014 this summer. Visit the film's official website. Excited?

That was orders better than the last trailer. I'll always hear this version of the song in my head when I see the original now, I love her voice, though I didn't like the songs on her album much.

I think Disney has perfectly captured the dark tone of the original story and has translated it well into live action form from first looks. It just simply looks amazing. It reminds me of the first Chronicles of Narnia film in how it just captured the entire spirit of the book in it's essence and that is the type of tone I see Disney wants to emulate again. Everything looks great and I can't wait to see it, hopefully it truly lives to the hype. It doesn't look like an Oz the Great and Powerful and it doesn't look like Burton Alice in Wonderland. I think the flaws in both of those films comes from the director themselves and on how their tone/vision differed. Maleficent just seems like a step into the right direction.

@damon_king:disqus I completely agree.

This movie looks a zillion times better then I had originally expected! I think Disney has a big hit in their hands with this movie 🙂 . It's going to put the 2010 Alice in Wonderland movie and the 2013 Oz the Great and Powerful movie to shame!

@quynhtruong:disqus Yes, and it goes perfectly In this new trailer and hopefully, it will be in the movie too.

Like the hat. I am very happy with how this shaped up. Very dark looking and Jolie looks fantastic as Maleficient. Not sure if I like the cheek bones prosthetic, but I really dig everything else.

Great branding. LDR fits perfectly with the aesthetic of this film. They're definitely trying to market this to the LOTR/Hobbit crowd with dashes of Alice and they're doing an excellent job.

FS: "Watch: Better 'Maleficent' Sneak Peek with Haunting Lana Del Rey Tune" Slashfilm: "New Look at ‘Maleficent’ Features Lana Del Rey and a Classic Disney Tune" This headline similarity is not an uncommon thing. So I'm inclined to ask: who's scraping whom?

txJM on Jan 27, 2014

11

While I'm not saying that this kind of scraping isn't rare, I don't really see the similarity in this example. "Tune" may be the only word that could be more than a coincidence, but really, those two titles both simply say what the scoop is in this trailer. -- Anyway, I agree with everyone else that this is an incredible trailer (and I don't even go for these CGI-fantasy-fests in the last few years at all). It'd be a welcome surprise from this type of movie if it turned out good.

I disagree that the scoop is the music. The scoop is the trailer. And like I said: this is a prevailing issue between the two sites mentioned. It's just sloppy.

txJM on Jan 27, 2014

The music is key to this trailer compared to other trailers I'd say.

Even so... Song. Music. Ditty. Piece. Number. Single. Track. Ballad. You see where I'm going with this.

txJM on Jan 27, 2014

15

No, tune is a common word. Ditty? For real?

OfficialJab on Jan 28, 2014

16

How convenient that you've ignored seven words to single out one as a straw man.

txJM on Jan 28, 2014

17

Piece? Number? Single? Ballad? For real? I'd maybe accept 'track' if it weren't a cover, that would have made me expect it to be hers. Song would also be fine, but how is that indicative of anything?

OfficialJab on Jan 28, 2014

18

It's indicative of a desire to be original.

Good one. Juvenile taunts of self quantification always get me right in the hurt button.

Thanks, I thought it was all right. Anyway, I agree with the other guy that those aren't especially similar, definitely not suspiciously so. I'm almost surprised that they're not more similar.

You could, but it would just look even stranger on your part. They all contain the person, the project and the role in question, as they should, so they have that in common. Only so many ways to say 'Ben Affleck in David Fincher's Gone Girl". In fact, I'm surprised they're even that different.
