Must Watch: Controversial Sundance Indie 'Compliance' First Trailer

"You don't realize what kind of trouble you're in." Magnolia Pictures has unveiled the first trailer for Craig Zobel's Compliance, a film that premiered at Sundance to some controversy, but ended up making quite a splash because of its subversiveness and honesty. Based on a number of true stories, Compliance is about a teenage girl (played by Dreama Walker) working at a fast food restaurant who gets abused by coworkers because a man claiming to be a cop on the phone is telling them what to do. It's one of those you have to see it to believe it kind of stories, based on real events that happened. It's a good film, but extremely unsettling.

When a prank caller posing as a police officer convinces a fast food restaurant manager to interrogate an innocent young female employee, no-one is left unharmed. Based on true events (more info on Wikipedia).
Compliance is both written & directed by up-and-coming American filmmaker Craig Zobel, of the film Great World of Sound previously, who is also one of the co-founders of Homestar Runner. This premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and was eventually picked up by Magnolia Pictures. One of my favorite reviews is on The Film Stage. Compliance will hit limited theaters only starting on August 17th this summer. Interested?

No thanks. I assure you, not a snap judgment. The real world can be a dark enough place on it's own. I can't invest the time to watch a movie that reminds me. Just my perspective 🙂

(Goosebumps!) This looks good. And disturbingly a reminder what really goes in a real world. This is a wake up call that there are evil and crazy people out there and never take calls seriously. For instance, he wanted to do a strip search to this victim and torment her with false accusations. Fucking assholes! I have heard these stories before. Sad!

I always pictured the source material working better as comedy, but it does look interesting as a thriller too. Still can't believe these people fell for it...another similar case happened near where I live.

If Fincher's Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was the feel bad movie of the Christmas season (as it was advertised), this is certainly the feel bad movie of the Summer. A 100% total downer but while disheartening, it's likened to Requiem For A Dream in that it's an extremely taut and well crafted movie. But seeing it once is more than enough for anyone...

I'm torn between wanting to see how they pull the movie together and how the events play out, and just knowing how horrible some people can be and that I wont feel good afterwards. It's terrible anyone had to go through this, and people who should know her, turning on her because a voice over the phone told them to. There are just things that none of us should believe we can do to another person because a voice claiming to be in a position of limited (because they are all limited) power tells them to. Even if these things are in the power of the person on the phone, it's up to them to come do certain things in person. Many of the things that seem to happen to this girl would have to be done at a station, and people should at least be that aware if nothing else. I had a guy call my phone asking me how I got my phone and if it was stolen. I was on a trip, and he claimed to be an officer of my hometown. Then he asked to speak with a guy. I happened to know a guy by that name, but no one would have known my number and that this guy, who was a friend of my boyfriend at the time (not really a friend of mine or someone I ever mentioned), was with us on our trip. We got rid of him, and I think that's pretty easy to do when they're fakes and you don't blindly listen to them. Thus the message of the film.

i think this looks very interesting - but as far as i'm concerned - if i was in that girls position, i'd tell the guy on the phone to show up at the fast food place or FU#k OFF.
