The Hobbit

They're going all out for this last one. Peter Jackson has officially announced that the third and final movie in The Hobbit trilogy, wrapping up our adventures in Middle Earth this December, has been retitled. The new title for the release will be The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, indicating that this last one is all about the big battle and not so much Bilbo's return home. However, Jackson does explain this and says this decision for the new title was made last week after they reviewed a final cut of the last movie. Ever since these movies were announced, the final one was titled There and Back Again, but that's no longer the case.

Here is Peter Jackson's explanation and new title announcement as posted to his own Facebook page:

Our journey to make The Hobbit Trilogy has been in some ways like Bilbo's own, with hidden paths revealing their secrets to us as we've gone along. "There and Back Again" felt like the right name for the second of a two film telling of the quest to reclaim Erebor, when Bilbo's arrival there, and departure, were both contained within the second film. But with three movies, it suddenly felt misplaced—after all, Bilbo has already arrived "there" in the "Desolation of Smaug".

When we did the premiere trip late last year, I had a quiet conversation with the studio about the idea of revisiting the title. We decided to keep an open mind until a cut of the film was ready to look at. We reached that point last week, and after viewing the movie, we all agreed there is now one title that feels completely appropriate.

And so: "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" it is.

As Professor Tolkien intended, "There and Back Again" encompasses Bilbo's entire adventure, so don’t be surprised if you see it used on a future box-set of all three movies.

Jackson did also confirm that an Extended Edition of The Desolation of Smaug is on the way, with "over 25 mins" of new footage in it. "Before then however, we have a film to finish, and much to share with you"

In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit… J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit, being directed by Peter Jackson as three separate movies, is set in Middle-Earth 60 years before Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, which Jackson and his filmmaking team brought to the big screen in a trilogy ten years ago. The films, with screenplays by Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Guillermo del Toro and Peter Jackson, were shot consecutively in 48FPS 3D using the latest cameras. The Hobbit follows the journey of Bilbo Baggins, played by Martin Freeman, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor. The Battle of the Five Armies arrives in theaters in HFR, IMAX & 3D on December 17th, 2014 later this year. We'll see you in theaters then.

Not upset at all. This certainly is the 'bigger' title and sounds more grand and exciting. No qualms about this. I would like to see The Hobbit coming out on November 7th and Interstellar coming out on December 19th, though....effectively swapping release dates.

Why? The Hobbit definitely belongs in December.

Meh, a combination of 'I'd like to see The Hobbit sooner' and 'I think Interstellar would perform better in December'. The weekend I'm suggesting that they open Interstellar on, December 19th, is the same weekend that Titanic and Avatar opened on...and the same weekend Star Wars Episode 7 plans to open on next year. It's a good place to open a movie with a lot of ambition.

The title is definitely enticing. Cant wait for the 3rd installment, the first two were completely flawless.

I don't know about 'completely flawless' but they were good, and the 2nd was certainly better.

6

I have my opinion, you have yours. Although i'm not quite sure what you mean by the 2nd is certainly better.

7

I mean that I liked the first one a lot, and the 2nd was even better. I wouldn't be shocked if the 3rd was the best of them.

I dont know if i can categorize them that way though. I mean its not like we're talking about sequel's here you know. These films are really just one big story. I thoroughly enjoyed 1 and 2. The 3rd installment will just be the icing on the cake.

Sucked..all he had to do was follow the book. He missed.

Not sure you know what "complete" or "flawless" means.

I'm sure you're unsure of a lot of things Mr. "I dont even care anymore"..........so BECAUSE you dont care, well your words have absolutely no bearing on this subject now do they?! So run along back to your acquarium little unsure turtle, life is way too complicated for you on the outside to comprehend.

Wow, nice rude response, but I guess you are right. Doesn't change the fact that calling DoS "completely flawless" is wildly incorrect from all objective view points. Not sure why my avatar has any bearing, but I guess you just needed to prove your rudeness.

Was it not rude to insult my intelligence?? Your objective view points are yours and yours alone, in fact they are YOUR opinions. Whatever your beef is with the movies is just that.....your problems. Another thing, not ever will you see a movie pay true and complete justice to the original source, especially Tolkien's books, BUT, Peter Jackson has done a remarkable job in script, actors, and direction, plus the imagination that Peter Jacksons crew have all put into the two trilogies is pretty amazing. Of course anything can always be done better, but until that day comes (if it ever does) i'd say Peter has paid an enormous homage to the books.

Are you Peter Jackson's son?

At least they didn't go with "Into The Fire".

they should show the HFR version in IMAX, every time I have seen the HFR versions they are always in the smallest theaters.

I don't even care any more.

Wonder how badly this last installment is going to enrage me?! Why do I pay to see these movies? If he dares to soil the Silmarillion I'm going to vomit blood and burst into flame

What you didn't like an over long movie stuffed with filler to justify a third movie? I laughed out loud in the theater when they stole parts out of Return of the King to pad the time for DoS. And you know damn well in another 5-10 years when no one cares about lil PJ any more he will churn out the Silmarillion. I can only imagine the liberties he will take with that.

Strongly dislike the new title. But still very excited to see this get buttoned up.

I remember greatly anticipating the next LOTR movie, three years in a row. I don't feel anything like that for these Hobbit movies.

Not sure if it is just because im older, or just because these aren't nearly as good...

Spoiler Alert.

The problem with these movies might not be the titles 😀

ErrorSapiens on Apr 26, 2014

Every decision Peter Jackson makes in these crappy hobbit movies is for the worse, how can he make movies this crap after making the lord of the rings trilogy
