Congrats to all of this year's nominees! I'm quite happy to see so many unique and surprise nominations on here. Bond's Skyfall has five, even Amour has five nominations. Beasts of the Southern Wild really took it home. While there are still plenty of snubs and always much to complain/argue about, like a screenplay nom for Looper or Kathryn Bigelow for Best Director, this is a good selection. 2012 was a solid year in film, and I was expecting an odd Oscars, but nonetheless I'm quite satisfied with these nominations - what else can I really say. Only 44 days until the big ceremony, it won't be too long to see. Thoughts on the 2013 noms?

Quantified: Steven Spielberg's Lincoln was the top film, with 12 nominations; next came Ang Lee's Life of Pi with 11 nominations. Quvenzhané Wallis of Beasts of the Southern Wild and Emmanuelle Riva of Amour are the youngest and oldest, respectively, Lead Actress Oscar nominees ever. Congrats to both! 20th Century Fox took home 31 nominations for all of their films in total, with Sony Pictures coming in next at 24 noms.

No Best Supporting Actor nomination for Jim Broadbent in Cloud Atlas disappoints me. And even though I go through the motions with it, Prometheus is deservedly nominated for Best Visual Effects but will unfortunately lose to Life of Pi. We all know it'll be Daniel Day Lewis for best Actor and Lincoln for best Film. Snoooooooze.... Wake me up for the Saturn Awards.

Gonna say Phoenix beats out Lewis in a small upset this year...

The King & Me! on Jan 10, 2013

3

I am so freaking happy for Beasts of the Southern wild 🙂 hoping it wins best picture. And such a deserved recognition for Wallis! It's a shame Cloud Atlas wasn't nominated, at least for adapted screenplay and make up, oh well, such an underrated movie.

Ricardo_PT on Jan 10, 2013

4

Why only 9 nominees for best picture? Anyone knows? Oh, and Life of Pi is the most overrated movie of the year :/

Ricardo_PT on Jan 10, 2013

5

The academy can nominate up to 10 for best picture but don't HAVE to nominate 10. The only year they had to was when they first expanded it a few years ago. The following year they changed it from a required 10 to up to 10 nominations for best picture.

Jason McGuire on Jan 10, 2013

6

It doesn't make any sense! If they want 10 nominees they should pick 10 each year, how can they choose between 2 movies for the 9th spot when they can add the 2 of them? Oh well, nonsense But thanks for the info 😉

Ricardo_Pt on Jan 10, 2013

7

Looper, Cloud Atlas, and most importantly Tarantino snubbed. Shocking.

AJ on Jan 10, 2013

8

Cloud atlas should get makeup. Tykwer for direction but wachowskis acting direction was very bad

Norbert P. Korzus on Jan 10, 2013

9

I expected the snubs that have already been mentioned, and expected the movies, actors/actresses that were recognized. Anyone else feel there isn't much surprise this year?

My Pics that I find relevant. I ommited several categories and only predicted on what I find interesting. Another big snub to point out - John Hawkes as Mark O'Brien in The Sessions! He deserved AT LEAST a nomination for that role, at least a nom. Maybe not a win, but at least the tip of the hat, because DAMN is he good in that. He plays a guy paralyzed by polio confined to an iron lung yet does an impeccable job and gives an endearing performance. It's a shame they missed him entirely... Had to toss this into the mix!

Alex Billington on Jan 10, 2013

12

Haven't seen The Sessions yet, but they coulda tossed out Hugh Jackman in Les Miserables. He was not that good.

Marcus on Jan 10, 2013

13

Agreed. Very disappointing.

PBGray on Jan 10, 2013

14

Could anyone point me to any article(if it exist) that shows how much campaign money was spent on promoting ones film for an Oscar nod? A few years ago, I remember that a foreign film spent more than it's budget on such a campaign to get nominated. Some of these nominees have "For your consideration" adds everywhere.

David Banner on Jan 11, 2013

15

The academy is fuckin clueless . skyfall was shit

3abdolly on Jan 10, 2013

16

I agree with you mate fucking clueless

Excel on Jan 10, 2013

17

even if you thought it was shit, it was only nominated for technical awards and the song. not like its stealing any prestige awards or anything (except deakins, who deserves it) take the stick out of your ass.

Chris Purdy on Jan 10, 2013

18

You mean the song? The film was only nominated for specific achievements, unrelated to how 'shit' the overall package was/wasn't.

OfficialJab on Jan 10, 2013

19

Not a single nomination for TDKR? The Oscars truly are a joke.

Geoffrey Shauger on Jan 10, 2013

20

The TDKR no Oscars because it was shit, it bored the pants off me. it wasn't has good has TDK.

Excel on Jan 10, 2013

21

What a moron

Guest on Jan 10, 2013

22

While I wouldn't say "it was shit", it's definitely not as strong as some of the other films on this list, so I think it fair to keep it off most of these lists.

Phillip Gockel on Jan 10, 2013

23

I'd like to see it get a nom for score, and maybe cinematography. That said, I don't know which films I'd replace it with. That's the trick of it.

OfficialJab on Jan 10, 2013

24

I'm disappointed to see that The Dark Knight Rises and The Avengers were snubbed big time. I was hoping that Avengers in particular would get a Best Picture nod, but I guess with it being the greatest comic-book movie of all-time and all... of course it didn't need a nomination. Oh well, I guess. Though I'm kinda surprised that they didn't even give Rises a nomination for the cinematography and the score of it all (which was probably the best that I've seen and heard all year long).

thejon93rd on Jan 10, 2013

25

They should bring out a category in the academy for the best adaptation of comic book hero in to a film. That is my thoughts.

Excel on Jan 10, 2013

26

The Master deserved a best cine award. sigh.

David Kinskey-Lebeda on Jan 10, 2013

27

You don't see much better acting than the last 30 minutes of The Grey and Liam Neeson. I'd consider that a snub. Dwight Henry from Beasts of the Southern Wild too, he was phenomenal!

breck on Jan 10, 2013

28

Agree with both of these!

Alex Billington on Jan 10, 2013

29

Looks like Ben Affleck has to wait awhile for his turn... Also, Bigelow and Tarantino are missing. But alas, behold the oscars!

Isildur_of_Numenor on Jan 10, 2013

30

if they were gonna go with nine, they could have added a tenth. just sayin'

Chris Purdy on Jan 10, 2013

31

I am shocked not to see Ben Affleck's name for Best Director. This was his best shot.

Mayank Patel on Jan 10, 2013

32

I agree, he could have made this film really boring, but even though we all knew the outcome he kept it thrilling and engaging, and in my opinion that's amazing

Zade_92 on Jan 10, 2013

33

this year was a poor year for movies, summertime movies were good but the academy doesn't recognize them. it seems if a movie made money or people were entertained, they don't acknowledge that. its like they look for movies people have never seen......and stop talking about cloud atlas , that movie was horrible

josh on Jan 10, 2013

34

Beasts of the Southern Wild is such the political PC pick its nauseating, and i usualy champion all indie films but this one missed the mark with me.

Happy Camper on Jan 10, 2013

35

Satisfied because Amour getting some love (no pun)! Moonrise Kingdom and The Master could have gotten more noms, but other than I'm happier than other years..

Davide Coppola on Jan 10, 2013

36

Peter Jackson DOESN'T get a picture/director nom for a Tolkien film? Truly, a new age has begun.

OfficialJab on Jan 10, 2013

37

I'm glad that Zero Dark Thirty only got nominated for best picture and a few others and not a bunch of awards, though i will be upset if it wins best picture, granted i havent seen it yet, but thats my problem its going up for the 2012 best picture but its not getting released in most theaters this week. I wasnt able to see it before the year ends so why should it be up for best picture of 2012?

Zade_92 on Jan 10, 2013

38

Kon-Tiki! Fuck yes! Proud Norwegian here.

Nielsen700 on Jan 10, 2013

39

Oslo, August 31st is another Norwegian film that should have gotten nominated.

Marcus on Jan 10, 2013

40

Saw it in 2011... Us foreigners only get one nomination per country by the way.

Nielsen700 on Jan 10, 2013

41

They should increase the Best Foreign Film nominees to 9 as well.

Marcus on Jan 10, 2013

42

I think you mean 10, but agreed non the less.

Nielsen700 on Jan 11, 2013

43

Question is, with all the liberties the filmmakers took on the story of Kon-Tiki, can it win? I think when it comes to a historical piece, if you go too far, it won't get recognized. Trivia: Norway/Thor Heyerdahl won an Oscar for Best Documentary, it was in 1950, for Kon-Tiki. Oslo, August 31st by Joachim Trier should have been chosen over Kon-Tiki.

David Banner on Jan 11, 2013

44

It's a long time since I've seen Oslo, August 31, but it doesn't really matter. Amour is going to win anyway, being nominated for Best Picture and all. The trivia is pretty cool. Something every Norwegian filmlover knows, or at least should know.

Nielsen700 on Jan 11, 2013

45

Are you kidding me??? now Argo and crap like that is listed while The Hobbit is not? are you crazy? seriously, this is some kind of the worst shit ever for 2013 and the academy is so much stupid for the last few years. Peter Jackson and The Hobbit should be listed not only for visual effect and make up "YOU FOOLS" but also everything else. "You shall NOT pass", I wish I could stop this foolishness :/ Epic Fail ... OMG, and nothing either for The Dark Knight Rises and Nolan? HAHAH, this is so sad.

Ali Linx on Jan 10, 2013

46

you are obviously just a fan boy of tolkien and not films because Argo and a lot of those films in the list are definitely not crap, you may not like them, but they are not crap.

Zade_92 on Jan 10, 2013

47

They surely deserve to be nominated for visual effects, but I noticed the effects a lot more than I did in Rings. The best visual effects are unrecognisable but they seemed to have trouble giving things weight, and trouble with fire. And yeah, you do come of as just a furious fanboy.

OfficialJab on Jan 10, 2013

48

lol clueless fan boy, the hobbit was average at best.

yolo on Jan 10, 2013

Still 2 more Hobbit films coming, maybe they'll get more love next year/s.

David Banner on Jan 10, 2013

Several snubs seems to be an indicator of a good movie year - the more great ones there are, the more get 'snubbed'. Did we just have a pretty good run this year?

It's mostly alright. But I am a little sad to see a few of my faves missing. Haha.

Looper wasn't snubbed. It really wasn't that good and I am a huge fan of sci fi. Honestly, I'm surprised it was as successful as it was.

Cs on Jan 10, 2013

54

Hey, someone else. I'm not sure what it was for me - it was filmed very well, had a great score, a clever (if not airtight) story, and good performances. I'm not sure why it didn't land for me, but it didn't.

OfficialJab on Jan 10, 2013

55

No "Best Supporting Actor" nomination for Ezra Miller (The Perks of Being A Wallflower), no way! Also the movie deserved a nomination for "Best Adapted Screenplay".

PapaJustify on Jan 10, 2013

56

Agreed

Ricardo_PT on Jan 10, 2013

57

The last time the oscars actually picked the best film of the year was when the departed won. I hate how movies like The dark knight rises never get best director noms when the amount of skill and effort put in by the director is way higher than some indie drama. The oscars ignore the auteurs, even Tarantino didn't get nominated

Random on Jan 10, 2013

58

Agreed - but the million dollar question is, which movie in the current nominees would you remove for it, and wouldn't that film inevitably have certain aspects in the directing where it deserved a nom over Nolan? I think it's more of a tightrope walk than people realize when they don't see their favourite person/film listed.

A lackluster year in film yields a lackluster list of Oscar Nominations, no surprise there. But, no nomination for Ben Afleck (directing) Argo? And I agree with AJ- No Tarantino nom is likewise surprising. Academy, I say to you... "Argo-Fuck-Yourself!"

no TDKR at all??!!! :'(

THEBATMAN on Jan 10, 2013

Wow The Impossible got ripped with just one nomination, and nobody cares. It had a great story, incredible performances by Naomi Watts and her kids in the film, and incredible FXs. And BTW Lincoln what a boring and missinformed piece of liberal crap.
