First Teaser Trailer for Barry Jenkins' 'Mufasa: The Lion King' Prequel

Mufasa: The Lion King Trailer

"The earth will shake… destiny awaits you." Disney has unveiled the teaser trailer for the Mufasa: The Lion King movie, from director Barry Jenkins (of Moonlight & If Beale Street Could Talk) jumping into the world of Disney for his next story. The prequel about the rise of one of the greatest kings of the Pride Lands, returns to the African savanna where Rafiki tells Kiara about her grandfather. Told with flashbacks, we're introduced to Mufasa as an orphaned cub, lost & alone until he meets a sympathetic lion named Taka—the heir to a royal bloodline. The chance meeting sets in motion an expansive journey of an extraordinary group of misfits searching for their destiny. With the voices of Aaron Pierre as Mufasa, Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Taka, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa, Billy Eichner as Timon, John Kani as Rafiki. Plus a big ensemble cast: Tiffany Boone, Kagiso Lediga, Preston Nyman, Thandiwe Newton, Mads Mikkelsen, Anika Noni Rose, Keith David, John Kani, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter as Nala, and introducing Blue Ivy Carter as Kiara, daughter of King Simba & Queen Nala. Alas, this looks as dull and redundant as expected. I'm not really looking forward to watching this. Is anyone? 🦁 "A lion who would change our lives forever."

Classic Trailer Rewatch: Ron Howard's True Story Thriller 'Apollo 13'

Apollo 13 Trailer

"Houston, we have a problem." This is easily one of my all-time favorite space movies. Ron Howard's docu-drama thriller Apollo 13 first opened in theaters in the summer of 1995, celebrating its 29th anniversary this year. The old 35mm trailer scanner YouTube recently posted a crisp 2160p scan of the original Apollo 13 trailer. Though this actually plays more like a teaser, setting up the story and stakes and characters without showing too much (the full trailer is also available right below it). In this movie based on a true story, NASA must devise a strategy to return Apollo 13 (which launched in April 1970) to Earth safely after the spacecraft undergoes massive internal damage putting the lives of the three astronauts on board in jeopardy. Starring Tom Hanks as Jim Lovell, Kevin Bacon as Jack Swigert, Bill Paxton Fred Haise, and Ed Harris on the ground as Flight Director Gene Kranz. One of the most nerve-wracking survival movies ever, perfectly shot by Howard and his DP Dean Cundey to make it all feel so real, as if the actors were really up there in this tiny spacecraft. The score by James Horner is also an all-timer. What a stupendous movie - a real classic.

Rad Trailer for 'War of the Ninja Monsters: Jaron vs Goura' Kaiju Movie

War of the Ninja Monsters: Jaron vs Goura Trailer

The kaiju must battle! SRS Cinema has revealed a short official trailer for War of the Ninja Monsters: Jaron vs Goura, a homemade kaiju movie from Japanese filmmaker Shinpei Hayashiya. It's set for a Blu-ray release this summer from SRS Cinema - available to pre-order already on their site now. Hayashiya has been making super low budget, modern monster battle movies for years, also of the Reigo / Raiga / Ohga series (Reigo vs. Yamato and Raiga: The Monster from the Deep Sea) before this. The ninja monsters Jaron and Goura appear in the city of Chichibu, and rival ninja clans manipulate the ninja beasts into a fierce battle. The cast and crew includes suit actros Mizuho Yoshida (Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack, Zeiram) and Akihiko Ohashi (Gamera 2: Attack Of Legion, Gamera 3: Revenge Iris), cinematographer / VFX / editor Masayuki Nagata, composer Yasuhiro Ueda, monster designer Shinji Nishikawa (Godzilla vs Biollante, Godzilla 2000), suit and prop makers Naofumi Kanamori and Tomohiro Matsumoto, and many others. This looks fun! I suppose the clunky look & feel is supposed to be an homage to all the classic Gojira / kaiju movies. If you love those movies, this one is for you. Have fun.

Adorable Full Trailer for Nature Doc 'Living with Leopards' on Netflix

Living with Leopards Doc Trailer

"The first two years are incredibly dangerous… I had no idea where this story was going to go, but I knew by following this family I would open a window into a leopard's world that nobody has ever seen." Netflix has revealed a beautiful trailer for Living with Leopards, a fascinating nature doc about a leopard family living in Africa. An ambitious film crew follows the lives of two leopard cubs as they make the fascinating journey from infancy into adulthood in this up-close-and-personal nature documentary. Narrated by world-renowned wildlife cinematographer Brad Bestelink, who tells his own story about how he embedded in the outdoors to photograph this journey and follow these cubs. Whoa - this is an immensely fascinating trailer! Starts with this long, adorable sequence with the cubs. Then breaks out into this song ("Feet Don't Fail Me Now" by Joy Crookes) with stunning shots blending into each other. Wild! I'll admit they got my attention.

Festival Trailer for Love Story 'The Shameless' - Premiering in Cannes

The Shameless Trailer

"I'm not going anywhere without her." Screen Daily has revealed an early festival trailer for a romance film titled The Shameless, which is premiering at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival coming up soon. This is the latest film from Bulgarian director Konstantin Bojanov, leaving his homeland to tell a very different story set in India. It's premiering in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes 2024. After killing a cop in a Delhi brothel, Renuka quietly escapes and takes refuge within a northern India community of sex workers. There, she begins a forbidden romance with the 17-year-old Devika, a young girl who is condemned to a life of prostitution. Against all odds, they will try to forge their path to freedom. As their connection deepens, together they will embark on a dangerous journey to escape the law and hopefully find their way to peace. This stars Anasuya Sengupta as Renuka, Omara as Devika, Auroshikha Dey, Rohit Kokate, Kiran Bhivagade, Tanmay Dhanania, and Mita Vashisht. This looks much more intense than just a nice love story - lots of complex dynamics, some heavy emotions, and tons of criticism about India's modern society.

One-Man Band Tours the Deep South in 'American Mileage' Doc Trailer

American Mileage Doc Trailer

"I'm not going to have any stories if I don't go out there and explore and do things." Gravitas Ventures has revealed an official trailer for an indie documentary film titled American Mileage, made by filmmaker Tim Hardiman. As far as we can tell, this hasn't played at any festivals since being finished, but it will be out to watch on VOD at the end of May coming up soon this summer. UK internet sensation Cam Cole (follow him @mrcamcole) takes his one-man rock show across the Atlantic for his very first US tour. Traveling solo in a shabby RV, Cam ventures the American South to explore the roots of the music that shaped him. Cam not only discovers the roots of his influences, but also finds that America isn’t quite what he expected it be. Along the way he performs with Delta Blues icons Bobby Rush, Jimmy "Duck" Holmes, and R.L. Boyce. He returns to the UK with a deeper understanding of not only his musical influences, but also the spirit of the American people. This actually looks pretty good, a story about learning to be humble in the face of success.

Official Trailer for Clippers Series 'Clipped' Feat. Laurence Fishburne

Clipped Series Trailer

"I need to show them that I have the power." FX on Hulu has revealed an official trailer for a series called Clipped, about the other Los Angeles basketball team known as the Clippers. Hot on the heels of the HBO Max series Winning Time about the L.A. Lakers, this one is also about a controversial moment in this other Los Angeles team's (recent) history. FX's Clipped takes you behind the scenes of a notorious NBA owner's racist remarks, captured on a tape heard around the world. This series is based on the hit ESPN 30 for 30 podcast "The Sterling Affairs", charting the collision between a dysfunctional basketball organization & even less functional marriage, and the precipitating tape's impact on an ensemble of characters striving to win against the backdrop of the most cursed team in the league. Clipped features Laurence Fishburne as Doc Rivers, Jacki Weaver as Shelly Sterling, Cleopatra Coleman as V. Stiviano, and Ed O’Neill as Donald Sterling. Also with Kelly AuCoin, J. Alphonse Nicholson, Rich Sommers, Corbin Bernsen, Clifton Davis, and Harriet Sansom Harris. This looks much more dramatic and emotional than the other series.

Classic Trailer Rewatch: Wolfgang Petersen's 'The NeverEnding Story'

The NeverEnding Story Trailer

"What magical spell does it cast on all who read it? What is the secret of The NeverEnding Story?" This unforgettably fantasy adventure movie originally opened in theaters in West German in April 1984 - a full 40 years ago this month. In celebration of its 40th anniversary, and for a look back at a classic trailer that has re-appeared online, enjoy these previews for Wolfgang Petersen's classic The NeverEnding Story. In this big screen adventure, a troubled boy dives into a wondrous fantasy world through the pages of a book. He ends up journeying through strange lands, encountering all kinds of creatures both kind & evil, making some friends & enemies along the way. Barret Oliver stars as Bastian, with Noah Hathaway as Atreyu, Tami Stronach as the "Moon Child", plus Patricia Hayes, Sydney Bromley, Gerald McRaney, and Moses Gunn. If you grew up in the 80s or 90s like me, you have seen this movie many times, but the young generations of today may not be familiar with it. There are some clunky practical effects, but there are also some creatures that seem so real it's hard to forget them - like the giant flying dog known as Falkor. It's fun to look back at how Hollywood used to promote new releases. This is "for anyone who's ever made a wish."

Watch: A Stop-Motion Existential Musical - 'The Burden' from Sweden

The Burden Short Film

"I don't demand much, my life is drifting away…" If you'd like to prevent your life from drifting away, you need to stop and take 14 minutes to enjoy this. You won't be the same after. The Burden is a Swedish stop-motion animated short film musical from filmmaker Niki Lindroth von Bahr. It originally premiered back in 2017 and played at almost every major festival - Cannes, TIFF, Sundance, Annecy, Fantastic Fest, and many others. If you haven't seen it yet, well what are you waiting for? A dark musical enacted in a modern market place, situated next to a large freeway. The employees of the various commercial venues deal with boredom and existential anxiety by performing cheerful musical turns. The apocalypse is a tempting liberator. In this comically acerbic musical epic, the animal occupants of a generic shopping plaza next to a freeway sing out their existential angst — doomed by the apocalyptic banality of subsistence in the modern age. How magical. With the voices of Carl Englén, Olof Wretling, Sven Björklund, Mattias Fransson. Click play below.

Crazy Trailer for Russian Superhero Sequel 'Major Grom: The Game'

Major Grom: The Game Trailer

Here's another unwanted sequel to a movie no one saw that doesn't look very good… An official trailer has debuted for Major Grom: The Game, a Russian comic book movie from director Oleg Trofim. This is a sequel to the 2021 comic book movie Major Grom: Plague Doctor, a big budget production in Russia about a famous superhero. In this sequel, a year has passed since the defeat of the Plague Doctor, and Igor Grom has become a hero for the whole city. But now he is waiting for a fight with a new supervillain. His perfect police life in St. Petersburg is disrupted by the arrival of a mysterious villain calling himself Ghost (or "The Phantom"). He asks him to play a dangerous game, the stakes being the lives of ordinary people. Well, that doesn't sound very fun! This stars Tikhon Zhiznevskiy as Grom, plus Alexander Seteykin, Lyubov Aksyonova, Aleksey Maklakov, Olga Sutulova, Matvey Lykov, and Andrey Trushin. Alas, none of the footage from this trailer looks any good, even the first Plague Doctor movie looked better than this does.

Watch: Andy Chen's 'The Spider' in Full - Horror Spider-Man Fan Film

The Spider Short FIlm

"You can talk to me. What did we say about responsibility, Peter?" This ain't your Aunt May's Spider-Man. Now available to watch online is a 10-minue short film called The Spider, described as a "horror take on Spider-Man." Joining the other two spider horror films this year - Sting and Infested. Written and directed by Andy Chen, an up-and-coming young filmmaker who goes under the name "Locust Garden" on social media, the short film features a legit cast. Chandler Riggs (seen in "The Walking Dead" & "A Million Little Things") stars as Peter, with Holgie Forrester, Carl Addicott, Matthew Tyler Vorce, Ben Thomas, and Caylee Cowan. It is an entirely fan-made, non-profit film inspired by Spider-Man. It gets really dark at the end, going down a path similar to Cronenberg's The Fly, which is exactly what I was hoping to see in this short. Super disgusting! Sony would never do anything like this with the real Spidey character, which is why it's rad to see a fan make something freaky & fun involving NYC's friendly neighborhood weirdo. Enjoy.

First Look Teasers for 'Tales of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' Series

Tales of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Trailer

"I need new butts to kick!!" Paramount+ has revealed a quick teaser for their upcoming animated spin-off series titled Tales of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, set to launch sometime this summer. This is a continuation of the massively successful animated movie Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem from last year, one of my favorites as well. Set after the events of the 2023 movie, the Turtles emerge from the sewers and onto the streets of New York, where they are faced with new threats & team up with old allies, to navigate through teenage life and villains in the city. The Turtles must deal with their new life as heroes while also dealing with the pressures of going to high school in New York City. Micah Abbey, Shamon Brown Jr., Nicolas Cantu, and Brady Noon reprise their roles from the film as the Turtles, alongside Ayo Edebiri reprising her role as April O'Neil. This series is the 5th animated TMNT TV show, and was originally announced last year along with the sequel to Mutant Mayhem. This takes things back to a simple 2D animated style, but it still has the same spunk and charm as the movie. Keep an eye out for more.
