Ewan McGregor & Ellen Burstyn in Odd Comedy 'Mother, Couch' Trailer

Mother, Couch Trailer

"You didn't have to go all crazy just to get the three of us together!" Film Movement has revealed an official trailer for Mother, Couch, a very strange dark comedy from filmmaker Niclas Larsson making his feature directorial debut. This premiered at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival last fall to plenty of mixed reviews, one of the big discoveries from last year's fest even though critics are divided on it. Three children are brought together when their mother refuses to move from a display couch in a furniture store. Which sends them all on an existential odyssey. TIFF intro adds: Ewan McGregor, Rhys Ifans, Lara Flynn Boyle, and Ellen Burstyn star in this sublime and eccentric story about the grand expanse that parents occupy within our lives and the family that has to come together to help you find your way. The cast also includes F. Murray Abraham, Lake Bell, and Taylor Russell. Reviews state it is "strange, bold, and more dreamlike than I could have anticipated." All of this sounds strange yet also appealing? I'm particular curious about this film - always intrigued to see how filmmakers try to pull off a unique cinematic concept like this. Give this a look.

Watch: Animated Short 'The Cocoon' About a Man Trapped in a Room

The Cocoon Short Film

How do you find your way out of a room with no doors? That's the conundrum in this animated short film titled The Cocoon, made by Chinese-Jewish American filmmaker David Shen Miller. After playing at a few film festivals last year, Omeleto has debuted the short online for everyone to watch. In the metaphorical The Cocoon, a trapped man goes to extreme lengths to clean a dirty room - coming to a realization about what it really takes to confront his trapped dilemma. "This intriguing animated short operates on a metaphorical level, using animation's inherent elasticity and freedom to explore deeply psychological terrain with a well-paced, compelling narrative." The idea in this is interesting, though the animation isn't top notch - it's a bit shaggy and obvious at times. Nonetheless, it's still an impactful little film. "He's given himself a Sisyphean task, with no real solution in sight, despite all his efforts. But then, he finds a way to transform the mess and imperfection around him into something else entirely." The Cocoon is only 9 minutes - give it a watch below.

Netlfix has unveiled the first look trailer for a new comedy series titled Tires, the latest comedy concept featuring the comedian Shane Gillis in the lead role (as "Shane"). This was initially revealed as part of Netflix's annual "Netflix is a Joke Fest" comedy event, which is why the trailer is launching now to go along with the launch there. A new sit-com with a bunch of tire shop workers. The series is co-created by Gillis, Steven Gerben, and McKeever - all three credited as writers & exec producers. Tires also stars Gerben, Chris O'Connor, Kilah Fox, and Stavros Halkias, with guest appearances by Andrew Schulz. There's a few funny moments in here, but can they sustain this humor for the entire series and beyond? Check it out.

In a Violent Nature Trailer

"What are you waiting for?! We're right here!!" Watch out for this axe-wielding madman!! IFC Films has unveiled another trailer for the acclaimed slasher horror In a Violent Nature, arriving in theaters this May (see the other full trailer). It first premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year to rave reviews praising it as something new. It's described as "a fearless roll of the dice... gushes exquisite gore and reimagines the slasher structure with newfound originality." The gimmick for this one is that it's all from the perspective of the killer - following him as he goes around slashing. This iconic new film tracks an undead, ravenous zombie creature as it makes its way through the woods. Starring Ry Barrett, Andrea Pavlovic, Cameron Love, Reece Presley, Liam Leone, Charlotte Creaghan, Lea Rose Sebastianis, & Sam Roulston. IFC is really putting their marketing might behind this film! Everyone who watches keeps saying it's crazy and super violet and one-of-a-kind. A must see when it's playing in select theaters later this month.

Kidnapped: The Abduction of Edgardo Mortara Trailer

"This will create new tensions." Cohen Media Group has unveiled an official US trailer for the Italian dramatic thriller now titled (in full) Kidnapped: The Abduction of Edgardo Mortara. This premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival last year under the shorter title Rapito. June Zero Trailer

"Some truths... have to wait patiently to be discovered." Cohen Media Group has unveiled an official trailer for a film titled June Zero, which has been awaiting a release for a few years. June Zero is co-written and directed by filmmaker Jake Paltrow, of the films The Good Night and Young Ones before. It premiered in 2022 at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival but hasn't been given a US release until now. This captivating film examines Adolf Eichmann's trial in 1962 in Israel, showing the empathy & humanism amidst the atrocities during the Holocaust. Told from three different perspectives of regular people involved in his imprisonment and execution. Entirely shot on 16mm film, this "vividly textured work brings to life the varied experiences of these characters, emphasizing that the same historical events are often perceived differently by people... Talia Ryder Goes to a Punishing Ballet School in 'The American' Trailer

The American Trailer

"What will you do for the role? How much of your life are you willing to give?" Vertical has revealed the official US trailer for an indie thriller tilted The American, which originally premiered last year under the title Joika instead. Not to be confused with the George Clooney movie also called The American (can they even name it the same?). Based on a true story, The American follows one of the select few Americans, Joy Womack, to be admitted to the prestigious, but punishing, Russian Bolshoi Ballet School in Moscow, where she is tutored by the vaunted Tatiyana Volkova. She dreams of becoming a truly extraordianry ballerina, but at what cost? "Finding unlikely support from Volkova, she risks her health, relationships and potentially her life in her journey to determine what it means to be great." Starring Talia Ryder as Joy, Diane Kruger as Volkova, Oleg Ivenko, and Natasha Alderslade. Haven't heard much about this, despite playing at a few festivals last year. It looks super crazy mega intense! Whiplash but for ballet, or so it seems from this trailer.

June Squibb is Now an Action Hero in Hilarious 'Thelma' Movie Trailer

Thelma Trailer

"We all have our good days and our bad days?" "And what's today?" "We'll find out." Magnolia Pics has launched their full official trailer the Sundance 2024 hit film Thelma, from writer / director Josh Margolin. It didn't win any awards, but it did win over the hearts of many Sundance viewers as one of the best of the fest (I wrote a glowing review). Inspired by a real-life experience of Margolin's own grandmother, Thelma puts a clever spin on movies like Mission: Impossible, shining the spotlight on an elderly grandmother as an unlikely action hero. Yes, she kicks some serious ass. With infectious humor, Margolin employs the familiar tropes of the action genre in hilarious, age-appropriate ways to tackle aging with agency. In the first leading film role of her 70-year career, June Squibb plays Thelma with grit and determination, demonstrating that she is more than capable of taking care of business. In addition to Squibb kicking butt as Thelma, this also stars Fred Hechinger, Parker Posey, Clark Gregg, Malcolm McDowell, along with the late Richard Roundtree (RIP) as her sidekick. Great trailer that really captures the vibe of the movie!! Don't miss this.

Hilarious New Teaser for Netflix's 'Exploding Kittens' Animated Series

Exploding Kittens Trailer

"It's Godcat's world, and we're all just a PR ploy." Netflix has revealed another official teaser trailer for the animated series Exploding Kittens, yes it's an adaptation of the card game and comics by the same name. "God and the Devil - trapped in cat bodies." From the Executive Producers of Beavis & Butthead, King of the Hill, and The Office comes a new animated adult comedy series based on the popular card game. The eternal conflict between Heaven and Hell reaches epic proportions when both God and the Devil are sent to Earth - in the bodies of chunky house cats. The original game's premise: "Bring the catnip. Draw as many cards as you can, and do your best to dodge — or defuse — fatal felines. Or else, boom goes the dynamite!" The series pits good vs. evil - but with cats. With the voices of Tom Ellis as God Cat, with Sasheer Zamata, Suzy Nakamura, Mark Proksch, Ally Maki, and Kenny Yates. I'm glad this isn't animation meant for kids, because all of the brutal, rude, amusing quips from God Cat are an important part of making this hilarious.
